Day 12

Today, I learnt something in marketing is calling clients. It is also important learn how to speak to clients over the phone. It is the regarding the e-invites sent 2 weeks ago for the upcoming event, ABB Customer Day 2009 on the 8th October. Bryan gave me a list of excel of e-invites to the various companies. I was very nervous over the phone, even the client requests me to talk louder. This is my first time talking to client. This is also why Bryan ask if I’m comfortable talking to clients.

After break, Nazreen Yunos told me not to call during 12 noon to 2pm. Lunch time break, it is also when clients not in the office and tends to ignore your phone. She guided me and wrote it out how to talk to client. Due to no phone on my desk, I went to Michelle’s desk to access the phone.

The end of the day, I have learn how to talk to client as well. There are several calls, that some of the clients had left the company or even retired.

Day 11

This week is my third week in ABB. Time passes so fast.
Today, I do not have any big task to do. I’m still waiting for Lincoln to give me the prices for the preparation of the PriceBook. Ying Hua assigned me to send a package to receptionist on courier before 12 noon to Mr Batcha.

Checking the posters printing and wording, see if there grammatically errors and spelling mistake and the font sizes. Checking words like optimizing, magnetization, customizable if this is American or British English. Copy data and burn software for the Year 2010 CD assigned by Bryan.

The funny thing is the HR centre, which Ying Hua ask me to help a temporary staff to take a pass and Valarie Wee discourage to take on behalf. Interact with this ITE teacher, who is here for a month helping out in Wei Xin software under Energy Efficiency department.

Day 10

Today is a very busy day for me. I participate in the ABB active day. It’s a great day when you had some morning exercising. Hahaha.

Self read up in the ABB inside intranet that they have a lot of PowerPoint slides presentation internal and external.

Submit invoice to Iris Chua regarding the Bopolis booth at level 5.

Deliver 100 thumb drives to Joey Chiang at level 5 Country Communication office.

After break, came back and count the number of tags (115 pieces).

Return back the projector to Miss Mary Kwok, Executive Secretary of pulp and paper division on Ying Hua behalf.
50 pieces of thumb drive to Pauline Teo, AP service. Task Completed.

Today, I finally get to do something in the PriceBook. Adobe Indesign left with 23 days.
Sean Ang is in charge of the Motors in the chapter 5-Motors Pricelist. Task completed editing the 3 Phase TEFC Squirrel-Cage Motor prices and there are 2 type of motors as followed, 50&60 output (kW), Motor Type, Foot Mounted (B3) and Flange Mounted (B5) or (V1).

Today, I sat beside Ying Hua, to see how she does the posters for the Customer Day stand alone panel posters. There have templates guidelines for Trade Fair and exhibition to follow. I learned how to use access the printers to print following file in the memory printing of posters.

Sok Yee explained what is Data Center and how file shared the network as T-drive. Took ABBtoday May 2009 Issue from Sok Yee. ABBtoday is the customer magazine of ABB in Singapore. This magazine is produced three times a year.

I went to level 1 to drop a letter in the pigeon hole in the store, task completed.
Tomorrow is ABB Active Day, Ying Hua ask me to join them for the active day in the morning.

Day 7 & 8

Adobe Indesign is left with 26 days.

Today I do data entry for the ABB Technical Software - DOCWIN Training 1-6. Completed rask. I also finishing up the last 3 posters. Today, I also helped Kok Lun with the counting of 200 per packet of Plastic Clips. Ying Hua indicated who in charge of the price book for the 9 different chapters.

Yesterday, discussed to Mr Ong that the PriceBook List have to wait for the colleague, Lincoln from business trip at Thailand. Hopefully, next week he will return back to the office. This year, PriceBook list have different templates guidelines.

Lincoln is in charge of the low voltage products prices from supplier, therefore most of the chapters have to update from him. Mr Ong said I might do OT in someday to finish the PriceBook, as the Adobe Indesign has the limited trial days left. Convert the Adobe Indesign CS4 to CS3 format for Ying Hua for editing. I learnt how to use the convert function in Adobe Indesign.

Day 5

It’s already the fifth day of work in ABB. Today, came office to check my NP results. I think today is a productive day for me.
Bryan handed me Adobe Indesign CS4 to install.
It took almost 2 hours to finish downloading.
Project Lead & Consultant, Sok Yee gave work to do. There are 7 files in the folder, New Product Booth.
I was assign to use and design posters with the use of the Adobe Indesign.
Completed 4 posters, Sok Yee praised I can complete 4 posters today in a few hours.
At first, I thought I will not able to do because it like designing brochures as in their product templates and aligning and fitting the words in.
Cropping the pictures within the grid and font size and format closely.
Therefore, I’m left with 3 posters to complete next week.

Day 4

This morning, Ying Hua seeks approval from Mr Lim for a PC. AP control Product, Alvin Tan setup a PC. He also saves his login account for me to access the net. I am really thankful for his help.

Around 4.30pm, Ying Hua assigned me to do resourcing corporate hotels with ABB to find the mid-autumn festival of mooncakes prices, baked and Double Egg Yolk (4 pieces). I also have to compare the prices, different banks cardholder privileges, across the different hotels and summarise which hotel offer the cheaper and the quantity of the mooncakes.

Day 3

Today, I handed an industrial attachment plan to my supervisor so that he can plot the timeline of assignments. In this attachment, I can see Ying Hua is working very closely with Mr Ong with my IA program. Therefore, I have several important assignments to accomplish. First Assignment is the ABB PriceBook Y2010 Preparation. This is a 3 months preparation to complete. Therefore, I do not own the Adobe Indesign CS4. Projects Lead, Bryan Loh gave a trial version of the Adobe Indesign CS4. With restraint, I only have 1 month to complete instead of 3 months. Hence, Ying Hua mentioned that I might have to spend more time to complete and do overtime in the office.

Meanwhile, waiting for PC approval from ABB iS. Ying Hua access a public PC for me to me to use. While the rest of my colleagues are busy having meeting, beside asking around to give assignments. Therefore, I spent my most of the time in the noon infront of the PC. There are numerous of ABB articles, awards and achievements in the intranet and internet to read.

Ying Hua ask me to do some searching on Adobe Indesign tutorials and videos, have a rough ideas what it is about and how to use it.

Around 5pm, my colleagues Bryan ask me to go in the meeting room to do excel of invitation whom to send to. Extract from a list of alphabet order A-Z from the rank like General Managers, Executive, directors, principals and etc. This is for the annual ABB customer Day 2009. It took about 45 minutes to complete.

Day 2

Today, I reached ABB at 8am. The whole AP Marketing Team came back for work. They were back from holidays. In marketing team, we covered all the low products like circuit breakers, control products, connection devices, enclosures& cable systems, industrial plugs& sockets, intelligent installation systems, intelligent motor control centres, switchgear and etc.

Ying Hua is Marketing Executive, so most of the assignment is by her. I was under her and also to lessen her workloads. Well, she gave me some ABBtoday brochures and magazines to read. Browse and read through the Price List 2008/2009 so as to familiarize and understand and use them in future reference. She also helps me to request a desktop PC and get approved from Assistant Vice-President (Regional), Mr Lim Say Leong. It need to take some time and approval so that I can start work as soon as possible.

Today, it is my first day of work.

I’ve been looking forward during my holiday to my attachment with ABB, especially when we report on the day without knowing what job scope allocated for us.

I seldom wake up soo early get prepared and around 6.45am left my house head to my workplace compared to heading school at 9am.

This is also my first time working in a big firm company and getting my first pay. I think this is a good chance for me to gain job experience.

There are so many things for me to learn, sight-seeing and explore in working place.

First day of work, reporting time is 8am. Ridzwan, Guo Hua, Gineish and Kok Lun and I waited in the room for almost 2 hours. We were held back for 2 hours in the registration room, waiting for the HR Miss Yvonne Chng to pick up.

She allocated us which department and meet with our supervisor. She also gave us an identification pass to enter the ABB premises. Mr NS Koh bought me to the office at level 4 to meet my supervisor is Mr Ong Peck Seng. He was not feeling well today and he also quite busy with his work. Mr Koh also introduces my colleague, Winnie Ong. I was appointed in Automation Product Marketing and Channel Development sector. Most of my colleagues is out of the office. Meanwhile, Winnie gave me some ABB magazines, brochures and catalogues for me to read and understand what ABB is about. She also told me in this department, we are engineers to help the technicians in marketing, troubleshooting and prices of the products as well as meeting with clients.

Winnie Ong brings me around the company and introduces some other division colleagues. At around 4.30pm, we meet up with Miss Yvonne for some briefing, de-brief and discussion of what ABB is all about. ABB is a leading industry in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environment impact. How ABB does and is being applied in our daily lives, although we do not see the ABB products but majority of the electrical stuffs, example electric, gas and water utilities, automotive, minerals, refining and power system, power products etc.

For attachment students, we have to submit monthly timesheet on the 10th of each month to HR centre and a form of declaration of codes of conduct of the company.

Hello, people! Welcome to fonger’s blog! ((:

I was supposedly in OIAP. Due to the outbreak of H1N1 most the company intended not to intake students for internship. So Mr Teo Ming Tat offers me Tersaki Electric and ABB Industry Pte Ltd to choose for my local attachment.
If not I have to do Final Year Project (FYP) Resistive Technology.
Hence, now I’m in ABB Industry.

I’m really looking forward to attachment with ABB Industry. Yet, all the attachment students also have a shorter vacation during our September/October holidays.
